Se o volume 27 foi apenas razoável, este é excelente, principalmente em razão da presença dos 27 Corais para crianças e coro feminino que finalizam este belo CD. Eles foram compostos durante um surto de criatividade no verão de 1935. Segundo o amigo de Bartók e compositor Zoltán Kodály, Bartók precisava de algum incentivo para escrever música coral, o que Kodály forneceu. Kodály também revelou que, antes de compor os corais, Bartók havia se apaixonado pela música do compositor renascentista Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Impulsionado por Kodály e inspirado por Palestrina, Bartók produziu os Vinte e Sete Corais para vozes agudas.
Os textos para esses corais foram extraídos de canções folclóricas húngaras, como seria de esperar, dadas as predileções etnomusicológicas de Bartók, embora aqui a música seja menos retirada de expressões populares do que em obras anteriores. Talvez o mais interessante sobre os textos corais é que Bartók removeu palavras, frases e versos inteiros dos textos folclóricos originais, em alguns casos substituindo-os por textos próprios a fim de aperfeiçoar o ritmo e o acento métrico dos versos. Assim, Bartók criou não apenas uma obra musical a partir de textos folclóricos, mas também poliu os textos originais. Sua música frequentemente borrava os limites entre a música folclórica e a linguagem mais abstrata. A linguagem musical dos corais é predominantemente diatônica e as harmonias são predominantemente triádicas. Às vezes elas criam confrontos duros e dissonâncias inesperadas. Os corais foram escritos em duas e três partes para coro feminino e infantil: oito dos corais são para vozes femininas, os restantes dezenove para coro infantil. Bartók posteriormente dividiu as peças em volumes de três ou quatro peças cada. Embora não tenha sido projetado especificamente como um ciclo de canções, o trabalho é frequentemente executado como um conjunto completo.
Embora as canções folclóricas húngaras forneçam o material de base para este trabalho, a influência de Palestrina e da polifonia renascentista não deve ser esquecida. A predileção de Bartók por Palestrina é evidente na textura contrapontística fortemente tecida e na imitação e fugas generalizadas nos corais. Bartók também usa esse estilo contrapontístico anacrônico e diatônico para acentuar as dissonâncias: no contexto de passagens muito tonais, os choques dissonantes entre vozes em contraponto são poderosamente ampliados. No entanto, embora os corais sejam exemplos magistrais de escrita polifônica, eles também são muito acessíveis tanto para corais quanto para o público.
