Steve Reich completou 80 anos no último dia 3 de outubro. Ele é o mais embasbacante e interessante dos minimalistas. É música para ser ouvida com grande atenção, pois as aparentes repetições contém variações que ocorrem a cada momento, criando climas inesperados. Com a cabeça quase sempre tapada por um boné e agora com oito décadas de vida, Reich vai montando uma obra que dialoga com o popular (Tehillim, por exemplo) e com a política (Different Trains).

Steve Reich nasceu em Nova Iorque, a 3 de Outubro de 1936. Diplomou-se primeiro em Filosofia na Cornell University em 1957. Depois, foi estudar composição na Juilliard School of Music e trabalhou com Luciano Berio e Darius Milhaud.
Tornou-se na década de 60 uma das mais proeminentes figuras do Minimalismo. No final dos anos sessenta e início dos setenta aplicou técnicas de música gravada à composição acústica. Nos anos 70, uma viagem a África abriu-lhe novos horizontes na área da percussão. A peça Drumming deu origem ao seu grupo Steve Reich and Musicians. Em 1974 escreveu a obra-prima Music for 18 Musicians, considerada uma revolução na música. Aquele vinil da ECM do início dos anos 80 jamais será esquecido!
Nos anos 80, a obra de Reich tomou novas direções ao procurar temas políticos e religiosos. A década seguinte trouxe obras de grande envergadura sobre as origens das religiões cristã, judaica e islâmica, bem como sobre outros problemas e conflitos das sociedades modernas. Nesse período foi nomeado membro da Academia Americana das Artes e Letras e da Academia de Belas Artes da Baviera, e recebeu a Comenda da Ordem das Artes e Letras de França.
Em 2000 recebeu o Prémio Schuman da Columbia University, Montgomery Fellowship do Dartmouth College, Regent’s Lectureship na University of California at Berkeley, um doutoramento honorário do California Institute of the Arts e foi nomeado Compositor do Ano pela revista Musical America. Em 2007 recebeu o Polar Prize da Academia Real Sueca de Música, e em 2009 o Prémio Pulitzer em Música pela composição Double Sextet.
