Este Händel dá uma boa ideia dos corais (com orquestra) criados pelo compositor. Mas tudo parece um sub-Messias, meio sem graça, na minha opinião. O Oratório foi um gênero que Händel consolidou na Inglaterra a partir da tradição dos anthems (hinos), textos sacros postos em música com solos e coros usados no culto anglicano, como se percebe nos Chandos Anthems e em vários outros. Sua estrutura e escala eram bastante semelhantes aos oratórios que ele desenvolveu mais tarde, introduzindo um dramatismo e pujança que os anthems desconheciam e dando-lhes independência da liturgia. Mas as motivações de Händel para se dedicar ao gênero não são claras. É possível que fosse uma tentativa de contornar a proibição de música operística durante a Quaresma, mas representações de dramas sacros faziam parte também de uma tradição de educação moral e religiosa estabelecida por Racine entre famílias ricas e piedosas na França.

Não se comparam aos melhores oratórios dele, sem dúvida, mas não acho sem graça não, gosto bastante dos Hinos (ou Antífonas) de Handel, acho muito agradáveis de se ouvir, e há algumas melodias inesquecíveis perdidas entre as antífonas. Acho o conjunto das antífonas de Handel superior a maior parte das obras sacras de Vivaldi, por exemplo.

    Música branda, corais claros, afinados. Melhores que os do vovô Antonio, o Ruivo.
