Maravilhoso disco! Aqui, mesmo as tais estranhezas do idioma de Bartók soam naturais. Também aquelas peças mais desconsideradas de seu repertório ganham brilho com os caras da Hungaroton no comando. Se você pensava que tinha todo o Bartók digno de se ter — os monumentais Quartetos de Cordas, a Música para Cordas, Percussão e Celesta, o Concerto para Orquestra, os três emocionantes concertos para piano — considere este conjunto de 29 discos. Nesta coleção todos os artistas são húngaros, mas esse não é o único aspecto importante. Ela é bastante democrática, dando espaço a vários artistas desconhecidos fora da Hungria. Por onde começar? As Rapsódias são lindas e conhecidas, menos conhecida é a Sonata para Violino e Piano BB28 sem número.

Este é um trabalho do último ano dos estudos de Bartók no Conservatório de Budapeste. Mesmo que Bartók tenha atribuído a ela um número de opus, ele numerou sua próxima sonata para violino (a primeira das duas grandes que escreveu em 1921 e 1922) como a “No. 1”, garantindo assim o esquecimento desta. Embora seja boa música, ela carece da maioria das características do Bartók maduro. Seu estilo básico e ideias formais derivam diretamente de Brahms , embora a essa altura ele já tivesse se apaixonado pela abordagem de Richard Strauss. Embora Bartók já fosse um fervoroso nacionalista húngaro, ele desconhecia a existência de um corpo de genuína música folclórica húngara antiga. Seria necessário que sua parceria de coleta de canções folclóricas com Zoltán Kodály o colocasse em contato com essa grande tradição, e é a influência dessa música que criaria a verdadeira voz de Bartók. Em vez disso, Bartók recorreu à música de origem cigana de Liszt , então amplamente considerada a verdadeira música folclórica húngara, para parte de seu material musical, particularmente no movimento final. A obra está colocada firmemente no final da Era Romântica. Sua estreia veio em janeiro de 1904 com Bartók ao piano mais o violinista Jenš Hubay.
