Cuban Baroque Sacred Music: Esteban Salas
Exaudi Choir of Cuba & The Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos

The Recording
Once again, Maria Felicia Pérez and the Exaudi Choir of Havana have succeeded in making an ideal presentation of the religious works of this Ciuban composer. One must take into account the acoustic properties in the chapel of the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba, where Ms. Pérez works with a choir few in number but high in quality – talented musicians who do not allow themselves to be influenced by the passing modes of interpretation concerning earlier music. The music was recorded in the convent of the Dominican Fathers Church of Sr. Jean Latran in Havana, situated in the district of El Vedado half city, half park. One can hear the song of the tropical crickets, which Salas and his parishioners must have heard as well. The musicians of the Exaudi Choir give proof of their high artistic quality, which places them among the most important choral groupsof the world. Thanks to them, the work of this great classical Cuban composer has been revived, and here recorded for the first time. The recent discovery of these works leaves us with as much astonishment as perplexity, as was the case when the early 20th century discovered the 18th centuty work of Vivaldi.

The organist Christian Mouyen, who realized the organ continuo, and the members of the Benedictine Monk’s Choir of Santo Domingo de Silos in Spain, contribute their remarkable talents on tracks 4, 5, 12, 14, 15 and 19.
