O libreto e o romance A vida com um Idiota, do compositor russo Alfred Schnittke, é de Viktor Erofeyev. A ópera foi apresentada pela primeira vez em Amsterdam, no ano de 1992. É uma alegoria da opressão soviética. Resumo resumidíssimo:
Primeiro ato: como castigo por não trabalhar duro o suficiente, “Eu” é forçado pelas autoridades a conviver com um idiota. Ele fica com Vova no manicômio. Vova só é capaz de falar uma única palavra: “Ech”.
Segundo ato: se no primeiro ato Vova se comportava razoavelmente bem, logo começa a comportar-se mal, inclusive rasgando as obras de Marcel Proust, pertencentes à mulher de “Eu”. “Eu” e sua esposa vão viver em um outro quarto e Vova acalma-se. A mullher de “Eu” acaba se apaixonando por Vova e fica grávida dele. Então Vova a mata e “Eu” torna-se um idiota.
