DeJohnette cometeu uma indiscutível obra-prima em 1979 com este sensacional Special Edition. E, bem, depois foi para outras plagas ser o notável baterista que sempre foi. Tentou outros discos autorais até que resolver botar o nome de Extra Special Edition num deles. Era um perfeito engana-bobo. Eu caí. Comprei a merda. A adição de Bobby McFerrin ao grupo do baterista deveria ter sido uma vantagem: o cantor pode fazer muito com sua voz, desde substituir um contrabaixo até usar seu falsete como uma trompa. Porém, este CD de temas majoritariamente original, não só carece bons temas como também não consegue ter um desenvolvimento real, particularmente nas faixas que incluem McFerrin. A coisa geralmente começa no que poderia muito bem ser o meio e termina de forma inconclusiva, com muitas das peças sendo pouco mais do que riffs funky para a seção rítmica. Apesar de alguns momentos fortes (principalmente do pianista Michael Cain ), apenas Seventh D e Summertime (ambas instrumentais) merecem ser ouvidas uma segunda vez.
