Esta é uma bela ópera de David Lang inspirada por Beethoven. Trata-se de uma versão moderna e sombria da única ópera de Beethoven, uma atualização de Fidelio. Fidelio conta a história de uma nobre espanhola que, disfarçada, consegue um emprego humilde em uma prisão onde seu marido está sendo injustamente detido por um poderoso inimigo político. Mas a ópera é sobrecarregada por um romance secundário e por porções cômicas que minam seus temas de combate à tirania e defesa da liberdade. Lang dinamiza a história e a coloca em um tempo contemporâneo não especificado. O libreto foi escrito pelo próprio Lang. Ele se baseia em frases dos libretos que Beethoven leu em versões anteriores de sua ópera e também adapta textos de Maquiavel, Jeremy Bentham e outras fontes. A música — lírica e assustadora — é excelente e cresce quando Lang afasta-se de Beethoven.
