Os senhores gostam de novidades, não gostam? Ainda mais nestes tempos de vasto mundo sem fronteiras, que tal então ouvirmos a estonteante acordeonista Ksenija Sidorova tocando arranios de trechos da ópera ‘Carmem”, de Georges Bizet, e acompanhada por uma orquestra turca? “Femme fatale, tragic heroine, free spirit, object of desire – Carmen fascinates and captivates like no other woman. She is irresistible. But what is her secret? To discover more about the mysterious attraction of this figure, and about the music that has made her an icon of beauty, strength and fiery temperament for almost a century and a half, my musical partners and I went digging beneath the surface of Georges Bizet’s familiar melodies and images of Spain. There we found a world full of colour, contrast, sensuality and wit. Bizet’s Carmen is a fantasy: a French composer’s lovingly crafted idealisation of the music and moods of Andalusia, a fusion of grand opera, comic opera, Spanish folk traditions and música gitana, and a vivid depiction of feminine allure. As a character, Carmen too is a fantasy. She can be elegant or wild, naïve or cunning, seductive or frivolous – she is a projection of the heart’s most intimate desires.
For me, Carmen is also a symbol – of passion, and of daring. For men and women alike, she stands for fearlessness, for freedom, for the power of love. And just as that symbol inspired Bizet’s imagination, on this album my collaborators and I have brought our own Carmen fantasies to life, expressing our multicultural creative impulses in each number and refreshing Bizet’s original fusion with an exciting blend of Latino, oriental, European and North American spices.
