Jan Sibelius (1865-1957) – The Sibelius Edition – CD 4 de 5 – Symphony No.5 in E Flat Op.82, Pelleas and Melisande, Symphony No.7 in C Op.105 – Barbirolli, Hallé Orchestra

  1. For some reason, this is the Sibelius that stole my heart. My first Sibelius was the Colin Davis with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and it just didn’t move me the way I expected it to. I was so disappointed, but a few months later, I tried this set and this time it just worked for me, entirely. I later went back to the Davis and found it too moved me. After that, with a few exceptions, I’ve found something in almost every conductor’s Sibelius—although a few have surprised me with how little they did for me—even ones not terribly lauded these days, such as Ashkenazy. But at the end of the day, although Blomstedt’s is by far my favorite, I’ll always have a fondness for Barbirolli’s for showing me how to enter the wonderful world of Jean Sibelius.
