Na verdade, o Oratório ‘Paulus’ foi a primeira obra que Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy compôs nesse gênero, após sua ‘imersão’ na obra de Bach. Nascido em uma abastada família judia, a família Mendelssohn converteu-se ao Luteranismo, quando o compositor ainda era uma criança. Obras como estes Oratórios, além da Segunda e da Quinta Sinfonias, trazem elementos de cânticos luteranos.
O Oratório foi baseado na vida de Paulo de Tarso, que mais tarde ficou conhecido como o Apóstolo Paulo, personagem bíblico que foi um dos principais divulgadores do Cristianismo, e que assim como Felix, também era Judeu convertido. Importante salientar que Paulo já era adulto quando se converteu à fé cristã.
Assim como aconteceu com o Oratório ‘Elias’, que compôs dez anos depois e que postamos recentemente, Mendelssohn não economiza em recursos orquestrais e vocais, criando Corais absolutamente magníficos, árias delicadíssimas, e demonstra um profundo respeito pela fé cristã. Escolhi para esta postagem a versão de Helmuth Rilling, um dos maiores especialistas em música sacra, e que gravou todas a obra de Bach.
