Entre 1680 e 1695, Henry Purcell compôs uma série de canções de boas-vindas e Odes para a celebração de ocasiões reais. Este programa, mostra a variedade e diversidade de Purcell, um compositor que aos seus 30 anos produziu muitas obras magníficas, e contará com um pequeno grupo de cantores e instrumentistas.
A Restauração formal da monarquia, com Charles II em 1660, marcou tanto um fim quanto um começo: o fim do experimento republicano da Inglaterra e o início de um longo processo de reconstrução monárquica e, com um rei politicamente propenso a acidentes no trono, a máquina de relações públicas de Charles II nunca poderia descansar.
Purcell juntou-se à sua pequena equipe de compositores no momento em que a onda de propaganda dos Stuart aumentava enormemente, e ele surfou nessa onda como uma pluma de tirar o fôlego, desde sua primeira ode à corte – o simples mas empolgante Welcome, Vicegerent of the mighty King ao ambicioso Fly, bold rebellion, envolvendo versos em sete partes e seis partes em coro.
