Não é um CD de música erudita. Ou é. É música antiga, mas não há Dowland aqui, apesar de que nos dois CDs anteriores do The Dowland Project havia. Vou tentar explicar: são arranjos para tenor, saxes (muitos), violino e algo como o alaúde. Trata-se de uma coleção de canções muito bonitas, interpretadas com extrema sensibilidade, delicadeza e respeito. Não são arranjos comuns, daqueles que trazem um compositor antigo para uma linguagem atual ou para a linguagem dos músicos, até porque aqui não há de modo algum uma linguagem comum — ou seja, não é aquele horror habilidosinho francês ao estilo de Jacques Loussier –, são antes recriações de músicos muito diferentes entre si sobre compositoções antigas, buscando uma terceira expressão, através de um outro grupo de instrumentos e culturas. Talvez o The Dowland Project faça alguns puristas mais xiítas se morderem de ódio. Porém, ficarei autenticamente desconfiado de sua qualificação como ouvintes… Sério.
Este é mais um grupo que tem como participante o genial saxofonista e claronista inglês John Surman.

This is a disc of whispered conversations: among musicians, cultures and periods – past, present and future. Anonymous composers from the Franus Codex and the Carmina Burana manuscript break bread with Josquin and Lassus, while ancient instruments freely consort with modern.
With a revised line-up, John Potter’s Dowland Project expands its repertoire on its third album, freely exploring love songs, chants and motets from the 12th century to the present by Oswald von Wolkenstein, Orlando di Lasso, Josquin Desprez and others including the anonymous composers of the Carmina Burana manuscript. New to the Project is Miloš Valent, the vibrant violinist and violist from Slovakia who is equally at home in early music and in the gypsy and folk musics of eastern Europe. Like English reedman John Surman and American lutenist Stephen Stubbs he is also able to improvise beyond the traditions: these richly atmospheric pieces are reborn in the interaction of the players.
